Episode 44: The Happy Land Tragedy: A Community’s Unforgettable Scars and Resurgence

On March 25th, 1990, the Bronx was shaken by a tragedy that would forever change the Garifuna diaspora. The Happy Land Social Club fire claimed 87 lives—most of them young Garifuna immigrants seeking a better life. But from the ashes of that devastating night, a movement was born.

When we talk about "landmarks," we often think of statues of generals or ancient ruins. But for the Garifuna diaspora in New York City, our landmarks are born from struggle, from the pavement of the Bronx, and sometimes, from the ashes of tragedy.

Today, we are visiting 1959 Southern Boulevard. To the casual passerby, it’s a quiet corner. But to us, it is "The Happy Land." On March 25th, 1990, 87 people lost their lives in a fire there—most of them young Garifuna immigrants from Honduras.

Today, we explore how a site of immense pain became a landmark of resistance, identity, and the catalyst for a movement that has finally reached the halls of Congress.

[02:00 – 06:00] SEGMENT 1: The Night the Music Stopped

HOST: To understand the resistance, we have to understand the loss. In 1990, the Garifuna community in the Bronx was tight-knit but largely invisible to the wider city. The Happy Land Social Club was our sanctuary. It was where you went to hear Punta, to speak Garifuna, and to feel the salty air of a Garifuna Village in the middle of a New York winter.

HOST: the Happy Land Social Club fire was an act of arson that took the lives of 87 people on March 25, 1990, in the Bronx, in New York City. The fire was the deadliest in New York City since the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory in 1911 and the most horrific mass murder New York City had ever known until 9/11

87 victims were trapped in the unlicensed Happy Land Social Club, located at 1959 Southern Boulevard in the West Farms section of the Bronx.

Eighty-seven souls. In a single night, almost every Garifuna family in the Bronx was touched by grief.

Decades later, the Bronx continues to honor the memory of the 87 victims, ensuring that their names andstories are never forgotten and that future generations remain vigilant in advocating for safety, dignity, and justice for all communities.

But this is where the "resurgence" begins. In the aftermath, the city didn’t know who we were.

Although Garifuna peope have been migrating to the United States in search of a better life since the 1930s, the community was virtually obscured in New York until the Happy Land Social Club fire. 

It was through the Happy Land Fire that New York discovered the Garifuna People! I will forever remember the words of the late Astin Jacobo, a Dominican activist who told the New York Times:

“Today, Spanish echoes through hallways and on side streets. No one plays stickball anymore, but the soccer games live on, this time among the Honduran immigrants who have carved out a niche here in recent years. And as with other groups, it took a tragedy before the rest of the city learned they even existed. In the Hondurans' case, it was the Happy Land fire. "We felt powerless when that happened. Until a tragedy happens, nobody knows the importance of a community." Astin Jacobo

The media labeled the victims “Hondurans”,  "Honduran immigrants," missing the unique indigenous thread that bound them. Our community had to stand up and say: "We are Garifuna." Out of that smoke, our political identity was forged. As Ms. Dionisia Amaya Bonilla “Mama Nicha” told the New York Newsday in 1991, "Happy Land was an awakening".

[06:00 – 13:00] SEGMENT 2: Building the Memorial & National Recognition

HOST: Across the street from the site of the fire at the intersection of Southern Boulevard and East Tremont Avenue, appropriately co-named “Ochenta Y Siete Boulevard”, stands a granite monument. It’s an obelisk  reaching for the sky, it is inscribed with the names of those who perished in the fire, and a commemorative tribute that reads: 

“In Memory of the 87 men and women who lost their lives in the Happy Land Social Club fire at 1859 Southern Boulevard, west of this site on March 25, 1990. Dedicated 1995

May they all be happy in eternity. Although we cannot see them. Forever they will be a beautiful part of our hearts’ memory.” 

May They Rest In Peace

From the ashes of this horrific event emerged the modern celebration of the Central American Parade and Festival, and the celebration of Garifuna Heritage Month; and local events, including the annual Memorial Mass organized by Bronx Community Board 6, will be held on Wednesday, March 25 | 6:00 PM  at St.Thomas Aquinas Church  1900 Crotona Pkwy, Bronx, NY 10459.  The mass  will be followed by a  procession to the Happy Land Memorial Monument to (Intersection of Southern Blvd and E. Tremont Ave, where a Vigil will be celebrated.

The mass and the vigil are held to remember the 87 victims of the Happy Land Social Club fire, and to educate citizens about the important role this tragic event played in the history of New York.

HOST: Legislative Victory: Just recently, Representative Ritchie Torres submitted House of Representatives Resolution 1123. This resolution officially recognizes the victims and designates March 25th, 2026, as a National Day of Remembrance for the Happy Land Social Club fire.

Justice requires remembrance. We thank Representative Torres for his leadership in recognizing this tragedy. This resolution honors the resilience of the survivors and the families of the victims, ensuring that their struggle and their enduring presence remain a recognized part of New York City’s and our nation's history.

HOST: This isn't just a Bronx story anymore; it is an American story. It is a Garifuna story recognized at the highest level of government.

[13:00 – 18:00] SEGMENT 3: The “Six to Celebrate” brochure

HOST: Resistance also looks like preservation. We are thrilled to announce the launch of the “Six to Celebrate” brochure, titled The Garifuna Diaspora, Tuesday, March 24 6 – 8 PM, STORYLAND The Bronx Book Haven GPS Address and Parking Info: 652 Exterior Street, Bronx NY 10451 (Lower Level) Good navigational reference point: Applebees at Bronx Terminal Markets.

This project, a partnership between the Historic Districts Council and the Garifuna Coalition USA, Inc., is a guidebook for a walking tour of our history. It features the Happy Land Memorial and other sites that tell the story of our long and enduring presence in New York.

These aren't just buildings. Whether it's the former Santos Batis Social Club, El “Parque de los Trujillanos, the former site of Jamalali Uagucha, Inc.  or the "Ochenta Y Siete Bolulevard" street sign, these are landmarks of existence. Every time a Garifuna flag is raised at a Bronx street corner, that ground becomes a landmark of resistance. It’s the refusal to disappear.

[18:00 – 21:30] SEGMENT 4: The Next Generation

HOST: As we wrap up Episode 44, we ask: What do these scars mean for the Garifuna youth?

For a 20-year-old Garifuna-American born in the Bronx, Happy Land might feel like a story from the ancient past. But when they see that Congressional resolution, or hold that walking Six To Celbrtae Walking tour brochure, they see that they come from a people who cannot be erased.

They see why we fight for Census Data Equity and why we are mobilizing now for Census 2030, and why we keep the drums of our fathers beating. Our resistance is our remembrance. Our resurgence is our future.
